mtvMTV, CMT, VH1 and Topspin have extended an open invitation for the Nashville music community on Thursday, April 4, to hear first-hand best practices for connecting with fans on the recently launched artist platforms Artists.MTV, Artists.CMT and Artists.VH1. Singer/songwriter/musicians will be able to discover how to connect new tracks and videos to new fans, meet members of the MTV/CMT/VH1 music and talent teams, meet Topspin staff and discuss direct-to-fan campaigns for albums, tours and merchandise, and learn how to get songs featured in original shows or get videos into music hours.
Nearly 20 thousand artists ranging from such established major label acts as Rihanna, to emerging artists like Ashley Monroe and BLACKBEAR, have already claimed or created their pages. More than 12 million fans have visited the site, and the coming months, MTV/VH1/CMT will launch a mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones.

the talkhouse111Noted music journalist Michael Azerrad has launched a new online music magazine called The Talkhouse, where smart, notable musicians of all genres and generations write about currently released albums. Some of the writers already on board include: Laurie Anderson, Andrew W.K., James McNew (Yo La Tengo), jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, Claire Boucher (Grimes), avant gardist Elliott Sharp, Rosanne Cash, Duff McKagan, Dean Wareham, Dave Douglas, Josephine Wiggs, Bob Mould, Mish Way (White Lung), and many others.
The Talkhouse will feature one piece on one album written by one musician each day, five days a week. On weekends, the site will feature a long-form music feature piece written by artists across many genres: film, comedy, literature, etc. Each day, the artist writing the piece and the artist whose album is being written about will each get a log-in to the site and will be able to have a one-on-one public dialogue which will be updated in real time. For the weekend feature pieces, any artist with a log-in will be able to weigh in with their thoughts on the piece.
Azerrad is best known for his 2001 book Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 and Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, as well as his work in Rolling Stone in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He will serve as editor-in-chief for the Talkhouse. He is joined by Michael Tedder (Village Voice, Spin, Paste), who will serve as managing editor. The Talkhouse is published by Figure Eight Media.

Nashville Memorial Service for Erik Blumenfeld Scheduled for April 1

The memorial service and celebration of the life of Erik Blumenfeld, Director of New Business Development at Spin Doctors Music Group and Founder/ CEO of OT Entertainment, who suddenly passed away on March 20 at the age of 30, will be held in the Country Music Association atrium on April 1, 2013. The service will begin at 6 p.m.

Pete Wilson, Pastor of Cross Point Community Church, will be directing the service with radio personality Billy Block commentating and several special guest performances. A small reception catered by Rooster’s BBQ with a few of his favorite food and beverages, including Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg Lemonade and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the OT Entertainment Foundation or the MusiCares Foundation. Friends and colleagues can upload their favorite photos with Blumenfeld for the slide show at the ceremony on the OT Entertainment Foundation facebook page.
A scholarship fund and foundation to continue Blumenfeld’s passion for helping up-and-coming music industry entrepreneurs and artists achieve their dreams is also being created in his memory. More information about the foundation and scholarship will be revealed at the memorial celebration.

MusicRow No. 1 Song

lady-antebellum-goldensliderAlthough Lady Antebellum takes us “Downtown” in their latest single, the song itself has gone to No. 1 on our MusicRow Chart spot after only 10 weeks of radio play.
It’s not too surprising that the vivacious single, paired with music video (seen below), was written by mainstay hit makers Shane McAnally, Luke Laird, and Natalie Hemby.
All three band members––Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood––play a unique part to the song’s video interpretation, helping define each other’s personality. For a second, you might think the music video is another of their Lady A TV Webisodes.

It can be said, nobody is doing it quite like Lady Antebellum. They’ve got the market cornered.

Nashville Film Festival Adds Music-centric Flicks

naffThe Nashville Film Festival (NaFF) will offer numerous music-related flicks when it takes place April 18-25 at Regal Green Hills Cinema. Several of these pictures fall under the Tennessee First feature film category, including:

Two: The Story of Roman & Nyro (Director: Heather Winters) – The journey of songwriter Desmond Child and his lifelong partner Curtis Shaw, and how they met Angela Whittaker, the woman who would carry their twin sons, Roman and Nyro, into the world.

Gibson Guitar Inks Deal with Japan's TEAC Corporation

gibsonGibson Guitar Corp. has made a strategic investment into Japan’s TEAC Corporation. EAC is a top name in audio and visual equipment, and a producer of data storage equipment and related products. The transaction was unanimously approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies.
Gibson has entered into an agreement with Phoenix Capital in which two investment funds operated by Phoenix Capital have agreed to sell to Gibson all the shares they own in TEAC Corporation, or 157,447,000 shares, (54.4 percent) of the issued and outstanding shares), at a price agreed between the parties of 31 JPY per share. As this will result in Gibson acquiring over one-third of TEAC, Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Law requires Gibson to undertake a tender offer process.
Thus, Gibson will make an all-cash tender offer to purchase 157,447,000 shares of TEAC common stock for 31 Japanese Yen per share in cash. Gibson will purchase a maximum of 157,500,000 shares. The tender offer period is scheduled to commence on April 1, 2013 and will remain open for 21 Japanese business days.
Upon completion of the acquisition, TEAC will become a member of the Gibson family. This will not only expand the size and reach of Gibson’s Pro Audio business, with products that both complement and build upon the KRK, Cerwin-Vega!, and Stanton portfolio of world-class studio monitors, sound reinforcement equipment, and DJ gear respectively, in addition to the premium consumer electronics of strategic partner, Onkyo Corporation (“Onkyo”), but also in future product development, has the potential to add value to the Gibson MI segments, and even with the fretted instrument category.
TEAC is recognized for high grade audio through its Esoteric brand, including multichannel recorders, handheld recorders, and Apple iOS devices, with growing opportunities in mixers and computer audio interfaces. Furthermore, TEAC introduced affordable multi-track recording, a technology invented by Les Paul, whose namesake Gibson guitar has established itself as the most coveted electric guitar.
TEAC’s product lines range from industrial data acquisition and storage, high-end audio, disc publishing, medical video, and broadcast into a broad-based consumer market through their TASCAM division. The company’s leadership in multichannel recorders, sound contractor products, field recorders, audio interfaces, and more has resulted in breakthrough products like the self-contained Portastudio that includes all elements needed to produce professional-quality recordings while retaining a consumer-friendly price. The implications of integrating these diverse elements into the Gibson family of brands are far-reaching, and further enhance Gibson’s diversification into the lifestyle arena.
This transaction represents a significant commitment and investment into Japan by Gibson. This is the second transaction Gibson has made in Japan. In January 2012, Gibson announced a strategic alliance with audio company Onkyo, where both companies made investments into each other. The size of this TEAC transaction – one of the largest Gibson has pursued – reflects the high level of confidence of the board and senior management in the Japanese market, and recognizes the technical and engineering excellence of one of the leading trailblazers in the specialist audio industry in Japan.
Post-closure, TEAC will remain a listed company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s first section. The company will continue to be led by the current management.
Commenting on the transaction, Henry E. Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson, said: “We are delighted to welcome TEAC and its talented employees to the Gibson family. We have both known each other for a long time and share a vision for the future: bringing together world-class engineering and technical innovation in the audio space with the world’s premier musical instrument manufacturer, and the capability to market music innovation on a global scale.
“Gibson is a strong believer in ‘Cool Japan’ and together with TEAC, we look forward to not only contributing to the global understanding of the ‘Cool’ products emanating from Japan in the music area, but also promoting the excellence of Japanese innovation in the industry,” Juszkiewicz continued.
This transaction is expected to bring about substantial synergies in joint marketing and global distribution, with benefits to both companies expected to include
–Overlapping channels for both the pro and consumer audio products in the United States, offer an opportunity to combine logistics with Gibson and Onkyo USA
–Further access to Asian markets for all Gibson products
–Combined scale in EMEA with an opportunity to consolidate logistics through Gibson’s warehouse
–Gibson can leverage both TEAC’s R&D expertise to develop a new pipeline of products for Stanton DJ. in the Pro Audio field, as well as in the MI and fretted instruments segments for further product development, and
–Operational cost synergies that allow both TEAC and Gibson to leverage back-office costs across its selected segments within the United States.
Macquarie Capital Securities (Japan) Limited is acting as financial advisor to Gibson and Baker & McKenzie LLP is acting as legal counsel. Citi Yuwa is acting as legal counsel to TEAC. SMBC Nikko Securities is the tender offer agent for this transaction.

Charlie Cook: Will Broadcasters Step Up?

CCook-onair-sm11HD radio has been on the radio landscape the last couple of weeks. It started when a spokesman for General Motors was misquoted about the future of AM/FM in the automobile dashboard.
The journalist that heard something not said, stated that the GM rep had predicted AM/FM was coming off the dashboard in the next year or two. This is not what was said and it started a firestorm about the future of the “radio” in cars. HD radio is being added to many dashboards. As are apps for Pandora, iHeartRadio and Spotify. Soon your dashboard is going to look like your iPad, which is okay with me as long as they continue to add apps and not eliminate choices used by 250,000,000 Americans every week.
Is HD the answer for AM/FM broadcasters? I agree the limited power output was a disadvantage but the increase to higher broadcast power levels for digital carriers will significantly increase the coverage in the auto and help with building penetration. I have not heard many current broadcasters complain about HD, but not too many have been vocal supporters. I would think if you have the ability to add stations to your reach, with drastically reduced costs, you would be on board.
As a consumer I like being offered more choices, without having to pay a subscription fee. I would be interested in hearing what is being offered. If my new car comes with HD factory installed I am excited about the additional choices. I can see why Sirius/XM, Pandora and Spotify will pooh-pooh HD radio. Unfortunately if I am a listener right now, I am also going to pooh-pooh HD radio. Many stations are simply rebroadcasting a co-owned AM signal, trying to expand that reach. I like this is some cases. I have a problem hearing WAJR-AM in my office. This is more about the hardware then the station, but now I have an HD radio in my office so I can listen to WAJR-AM as WVAQ-FM HD2. The coverage in my car will also be better in the evening after WAJR-AM changes their signal pattern.
Broadcasters should provide different programming on their HD channels if they are going to expect this programming to have an impact in the marketplace. If you’re a mainstream country music station on FM how about a Classic Country or Hot Country on your HD2 channel? Or how about programming a format that competes with your direct competitor in the market? Granted, today it would not get a tremendous amount of exposure but as HD shows up in automobiles, the reach will get bigger and bigger.
I know the point has been made that stations have cut back staff in recent times and there are not enough people to program another station in-house. Good point. I hope this does not stifle the growth of a new transmission source. Do you think the other sources are having an easy time at their business? I’m referring to the financial challenges of Pandora and Spotify. They haven’t given up. You think their technology is simple? Heck no. Once a strategy is designed for the HD channels, let’s find the people to execute it.
I hope this isn’t another example of a wasted opportunity. Automakers are being cooperative about installing HD as an option. Please do not respond to their interest in the equipment by failing to provide something that can generate an audience. I do not want radio to lose a place on the dashboard. Maybe not in 2013 but in 2014 and beyond. If someone in each market does not take the lead no one else will step up and this will become a missed opportunity of major proportions. Now this may be applicable to the larger markets only. I know the expense involved for smaller markets may be prohibitive. Not only the start-up costs but the fees stations pay year in and year out. Very likely those smaller market stations are not going to go out there as a leader. This could very well put an obstacle in the whole issue going forward.
That said, where you can do it, I see little downside if broadcasters are willing to step up and provide compelling programming. Of course that is also said of AM/FM.
