A star-studded group of Nashville songwriters recently collaborated to praise their "hero-in common" George Jones. All had written No. 1 songs for Jones and each honored him by donating a $300 scholarship to a deserving student in the just-created George Jones University. The group further vowed to collect similar scholarship donations from writers of other Jones’ hits. BMI hosted Big Machine’s Gold record party to honor Taylor Swift on her first RIAA certification for sales of 500,000 units. “I’m wearing all gold,” smiled the elated 17-year-old rising star. “Taylor’s wearing gold,” agreed label head Scott Borchetta, “but I’m wearing a platinum tie.” Judging by radio’s “most added” response to Swift’s new single, “Teardrops On My Guitar,” someone should probably start shopping for a platinum frock for Ms. Swift.
