Eric Church is one of the most promising new artists to come out of Nashville in recent memory. His career was launched by the success of first single “How ‘Bout You;” praise by national publications People and The New York Times; and opening slots for huge acts like Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hark Williams Jr., and Rascal Flatts. About five years ago Church waltzed into Nashville searching for his turn in the spotlight. Like a lot of new arrivals, he was armed with what he now describes as “mediocre” songs, a few years experience as a North Carolina bar and fraternity party act, and his dad’s college graduation present—six months worth of living expenses. Still, Church had a lot going for him: self-belief, a strong work ethic, and enough naivety to jump in head first. Luckily for Eric, and country listeners everywhere, he found his way through Nashville’s maze. A 2002 publishing deal with Sony/ATV allowed Church to fine tune his songwriting and get a few cuts. Next he signed with Capitol Nashville, on his birthday, and went on to write or co-write all 12 songs for his debut album. The singer-songwriter says, “I think we’ve made an honest record. I don’t think there’s a song on there that’s not me.” He adds, “Honesty is my number one responsibility. If you listen to this, you’ll find out who I am.”
