Jason Aldean plays Madison Square Garden on March 2.

Further proof of the genre’s growing popularity in the Big Apple is Friday’s news (Jan. 18) of Jason Aldean selling out famed Manhattan venue Madison Square Garden. According to his team, all available tickets were purchased in ten minutes for his first-ever concert at the arena. His 2013 Night Train Tour, which hits NYC on March 2, will feature Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett.
“I think people underestimate country music’s popularity in New York City,” said Aldean. “The Garden is one of those places every artist dreams of playing. I am blown away that my show sold out that quickly…it makes me even more excited to hit rehearsals this month and get the Night Train tour on the road. I can’t wait to see you, New York!”
Aldean is the latest country star to experience touring success in New York. In August 2012, Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell told the New York Daily News, “We’re seeing more headlining tours in the New York area going into 2013 than we have in history. It’s double what it was three or four years ago.” That article reported that New York is the single biggest market for country music sales, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
Numerous factors have contributed country’s rise in popularity in the last several years, including genre-crossing superstars Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum; and country music on television shows such as American Idol and The Voice. The CMA has been working to boost country’s presence in New York City for years, particularly since 2005 when the CMA Awards moved to Madison Square Garden for one year.

On Friday (Jan. 18), George Strait kicked-off the first of 21 tour stops on his 2013 The Cowboy Rides Away Tour at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Martina McBride is Strait’s special guest on the tour. An audience of over 15,000 was afforded what will soon be a rare occurrence–seeing Strait and his Ace In The Hole Band live in concert.
The evening began for many with a VIP reception in a room aptly named “The King’s Tavern,” which features multiple traveling memorabilia cases on display as part of “The King’s Exhibit” with featured items ranging from Dusty Chandler’s jacket (the lead character Strait portrayed in the film Pure Country), to Strait’s Country Music Hall of Fame medallion from his November 2006 induction.
Partway through the show Strait broke stride after he performed his current single, “Give It All We Got Tonight,” and introduced U.S. Marine Corps E-3/Lance Corporal Christopher Allen.  Allen was then recognized as the 287th recipient of the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s (MWSF) “Homes 4 Wounded Heroes” (H4WH) program and the first awardee to receive a key directly from Strait. The presentation was made possible through Strait’s longtime friend, Lieutenant General Leroy Sisco, U.S. Army (Retired).
“Our foundation is thrilled at this opportunity to work with such an incredible patriot as George Strait and with his help we are going to change the lives of the heroes and their families by awarding 100% mortgage-free homes at the next 20 concerts on George’s ‘The Cowboy Rides Away’ finale tour,” said Sisco.
The Allen family will receive a spacious 3 bedroom/2.5 bathroom one-story home in Bakersfield, Calif. complete with a pool and a two car garage. The homes made available for the program are donated to MWSF through partnerships and, as revealed at the show in Lubbock, will be awarded to one service member at every tour stop on The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

Bentley Gives Sneak Peek of Arena Tour

home2After 10 days holed up at Nashville’s Steel Mill rehearsal space, Dierks Bentley invited members of the media to preview his upcoming tour yesterday (Jan. 15). His 2013 Locked & Reloaded Tour with Miranda Lambert opens tomorrow in Columbia, S.C.
A major highlight of the arena run will be Bentley’s use of video and lighting effects for the first time. Yesterday, his brief set included “Tip It On Back,” during which the room swam with icy blue lights sure to be impactful in a large space. Bentley said he and his team strove to keep the “raw” feel of his show while mixing in video. “If this was the last tour we were ever going to do, what would we do?” Bentley and company mused while coming up with ideas. One result was a giant new stage he enthusiastically called a “jungle gym for adults.”
Band members huddled close together to perform “Up On The Ridge,” creating a sense of intimacy among the musicians that will translate to the arena audience. On the video screen behind them, a campfire danced under a full moon. Bentley also added personal elements to the videos, with one montage including a photograph of his father.
“’Home’ is one of my favorite songs to sing onstage every night,” he continued. “This song has so many different meanings for me.” He also referenced members of the military and their families in conjunction with the song that will vie for a Grammy at the Feb. 10 awards.
dierks2This week, the song’s meaning includes the homecoming of his beloved companion, Jake. The white dog happily wandered among rehearsal visitors as Bentley recounted the story of Jake’s escape and return, and the “overwhelming” outreach from friends and fans during the ordeal.
The father of two misses his family when he’s away from home, but said the sacrifice pushes him, his band and crew to make every show completely worthwhile.
After a hectic 2012 on the road, which included legs in the U.S., Canada and Australia—and notching the one millionth mile on his faithful tour bus “Goldie”—Bentley admitted he is looking forward to the consistency of an arena outing.
It’s not the first time Lambert and Bentley have hit the road together. She was one of his supporting acts on the 2006-2007 Locked and Loaded Tour. In upcoming shows, he said, they will team onstage for “some things fans expect, but will also throw in some things they might not expect.” Overall, he summed, he’s just plain excited.
Bentley has dates scheduled through July.

Yamaha’s Nashville Headquarters Launches Label

Chris Gero, Founder of Yamaha Entertainment Group.

Yamaha Corporation of America has been securing strategic branding partnerships with talent for the past 10 years from its headquarters on Main Street in Franklin, Tenn. This year, Chris Gero’s artist relations offices founded a new division called Yamaha Entertainment Group (YEG).

Traditionally, Gero maintains additional offices in New York, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles, which oversees marketing partnerships with over 3,500 North American acts including Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood, Michael W. Smith, and Michael McDonald. It now offers recording and video production studios to help artists record, produce, and market their original content.

MusicRow spoke exclusively with Gero about founding the new initiative.

“The current state of the music industry is evolving,” said Gero. “As a method of delivering our brand, we started producing videos, concerts, and promotional campaigns including websites for artists. As a result, a shift took place where talent was approaching us to provide these services and partnerships and we were turning away too many opportunities.

“YEG is a significant step forward for us. Our aim is to release five titles a year to have small successes. We have the leverage to keep the costs down and a much higher equity return to the artist. Every deal is different and right now, A&R is under my lead along with the artist services, marketing, film and record production.”

Yamaha’s 18-year partnership with Elton John not only led to the department overseeing the production and direction of John’s Million Dollar Piano Live DVD from Las Vegas, but also led YEG to its first signing of Leogun, a 3-piece rock band associated with the musical icon’s management company.

“We recorded Leogun in Nashville,” said Gero. “We have already released an EP, with a full-length album expected in the spring of 2013.” Following that will be a release by jazz bass player Nathan East, a founding member of Fourplay and collaborator with Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.

“One end of the spectrum is searching for emerging artists or established artists without a record deal. Another part is a for-hire service, placing product for strategic partnerships and branding opportunities. I’m looking at every possible partnering opportunity that upholds what Yamaha represents.

“Warner’s [Alternative Distribution Alliance] will be our distribution partner for the next three years,” continued Gero. “I outsource publishing and marketing and promotion, indicative of that genre, to work each specific record.

“We have one of the most recognizable brand names on the planet,” he added. “We have an international reach because we’re a global corporation. Yamaha is a very patient company. We’re a big company and we’re not afraid to take these chances. We’re strong enough to be isolated, but we’re in an age where we have to partner with a bunch of other people and help support each other.”

The Dixie Chicks Replace Lady A for Canadian Festival

Dixie Chicks

Craven Country Jamboree organizers announced today (12/18) the Dixie Chicks will replace Lady Antebellum as headliners for the Canadian festival on Saturday, July 13.

“We knew we had to find something extra special to replace Lady Antebellum when the band canceled their summer dates due to Hillary Scott’s pregnancy,” said Kim Blevins, Director of marketing. “We are extremely excited that we can offer a taste of country music royalty.”

The female trio joins additional performers including Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, Randy Travis, Scotty McCreery, Phil Vassar, Brantley Gilbert, Doc Walker, Sawyer Brown, Chad Brownlee, Gloriana, High Valley, Small Town Pistols, Jason Blaine, and Bill Anderson.

The Dixie Chicks last toured in 2010 with The Eagles, but have largely remained on hiatus since 2008.

Tickets are available for the 4-day July 11-14 festival, here.
